Networking problems between vista & xp

Alright here goes:

i have 2 notebooks and 1 desktop. 1 notebook has XP Home and the other notebook has Vista ultimate. The desktop has XP Pro. XP Pro (desktop) doesn't have an antivirus installed. Vista (notebook) has Avast antivirus installed. XP Home (notebook) has Avast antivirus installed.

Now the two XP machines are networked just fine. They can access each other with no problems. The Vista machine can access the two XP machines just fine, no problems there. The problem is that neither 2 of the XP machines can access the Vista machine and like i said the Vista machine CAN access the 2 XP machines just fine.

I have pinged the machines to each other and they can communicate just fine. I've looked at permissions on Vista machine and they are set to full control but i'm not too familiar with that stuff so i'm not ruling it out.

Also if i go to My Network Places on either of the XP machines and then go to "View workgroup computers", then i can see the Vista machine but i can't access it.  It says "you might not have permission to use this network resource, etc, etc. Like i said before if i just go to My Network Places i CAN'T see anything from the Vista machine.

I've done other stuff but i can't remember what it is, but obviously any help will be much appreciated

Thanks in Advance

It sounds like you have a third party firewall running on the Vista machine that has not been properly configured to allow local network access.  This could be Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm etc.  (i'm not sure which of these is currently shipping with Dell computers).

I don't think Avast which is antivirus software has a firewall.  Did your Vista machine come with something like Norton Internet Security (which has a firewall), McAfee Secuity Suite (which has a firewall), or some other security suite that has a firewall component?  Most new Dell computers do.

So installed that LLTD update file on the XP Pro machine, restarted and nothing. I thought that might of been it.

Any more ideas?

Man this is getting to be a pain. I turned off windows firewall on the vista machine and rebooted. I did the same on the xp pro machine and rebooted. Just like before i am able to view the xp pro from Vista machine but can't view vista machine from the xp machine
I appreciate the ideas keep them coming.

i'm going to keep looking myself

Vista has a much more sophisticated firewall than XP.  I know very little about it since I don't have Vista.  You might explore the options in the Vista firewall.

It did come with Norton. It also came with XP media center. I upgraded to vista ultimate back last spring. It wasn't through the dell vista upgrade program. I actually had a MSDN subscription at the time. When i upgraded i uninstalled norton because i knew i wasn't going to use it and Microsoft reccommended uninstalling it before i upgraded to vista.

So i don't see anthything in add/remove that says norton/symantec. I will say this, it worked before. My wife's notebook (XP home) has been able to view my files before. I just don't know when this stopped working. It's been awhile though, i'd say 2-3 months.

Anyway keep it coming with the suggestions
Thanks

No, you can get out of safe mode.   I'm afraid I can't be of much more help, having no experience, nor wanting any, with Vista.   See if the results of a Google search help you:

To further troubleshoot the problem, boot the Vista machine to Safe Mode with Network Support.  See if you can access then.  Report back what you find.
