networking with Windows XP Home edition
Is there anywany to connect to a workgroup on a laptop that has XP home edition with computers that have XP professional? If so how?

You should.
Just make sure that both are using the same workgroup (Right-click My Computer, Properties, Computer Name, and set both to the same workgroup).
You may need to play around with the Windows Firewall a bit (enable/disable), etc.
