You need to give us some more details on exactly what you want to do.  First, do you want the 2 computers to share an Internet connection?  If so, what kind of internet connectin is it?  Do you just want to share files and printers between the two computers?  If so, do you plan to frequently transfer large files between the computers?  Are the computers located close enought to each other so that you can set up the network with ethernet cables or do you want at least one computer to connnect by wireless?

I would like to be able to network them to where I can access the internet from my laptop, but my main goal is to move some files and things from my desktop to my laptop that way  I have access to the information while on the move. They are close enought  to where I can set them side by side, and work on them both. I hope that information will help, eveyone I have asked doesn't want to help me! Thank you very much!

In the simplest case, where you just want to transfer files back and forth, if both computers have an ethernet network adapter, you can connect them together using a special ethernet network cable called a cross-over cable.

To share a broadband internet connection and to be able to share files and printers, you would need a cable/dsl router.  If you want the laptop to be able to roam throughout the house and still be on the network, you would need a wireless network adapter in the laptop and a wireless router.

You will have to set up a network.  It would probably be best if you assigned each network card a static IP address in the local range - 192.168.1.1 for one and 192.168.1.2 for the other.  Then, enable File and Printer Sharing on each computer, designate drivers and/or folders as shared resources on each computer, and configure any firewalls that you might be running to allow local network access.  The shared drives and/or folders will then show up in My Network Places.

Once I purchase and ethernet cable, do I have to get the computers to find eachother, if so how would I do that?
