Did you re-install the chipset drivers?  Without them, the NIC carc can not communicate to the MOBO.

How do I reinstall those chipset drivers?
And forgive me... But what is the MOBO???

Thanks!

Ok, I think I have all the good drivers.
Yesterday I did a system restauration from about one week ago (the last days my internet was still working a bit) and just after that my computer was able to get the internet connection again, for about an hour, than it stopped. I rebooted the pc some time later and then got another internet connexion, for 1 or 2 hours again.
The technicians at dell are making me reinstall my drivers, my IE, diagnostic my system... All kind of stuff I thought about already. I'm still hoping to get something more interesting from them ; maybe someone here has better information, you never know!

Still, the chipset drivers are mostly overlooked.

Okay, this is all really strange!

So, my internet got back, but I don't know for how long... As I said previously (I think) I did the windows restauration, and then was able to connect for 1 hour, twice. Then, yesterday night, I was able to connect - again - and this morning it was still on, and working 100% I would say.

My question is : what could possibly be wrong with my computer to block Internet at some time and have it perfectly working some other times... Assuming the problem is not coming from the ISP (the other desktop computer is working fine ; and the routeur is not the problem neither) and that a clean reinstallation did not solve the problem.

If it was a dysfunction of some material, wouldn't it be impossible to connect all the time??

Start pointing finers at your ISP.

Yor ISP can only see the MAC address of the router, nothing else.  If it drops out again and the rommmate is good, you have left out soemthing in your discussion.

Really? 'Cause my roomate use this old computer (win98), plugged on our router (->cable modem) and everything works (and worked) fine...
Would it be possible for them to block my mac address, or something like that? (I know I use a lot of bandwith...still...)
Anyway now it has been on for almost 24 hours so I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Last resort came some days ago... When I did a clean xp reinstallation!

Anyway. I already did the winsockfix thing and at the time it didn't help. However I saw that there's a command to renew the IP protocol. I guess I'll try that next time...

I thought about it, and it doesn't make sense... So I guess there's something I didn't see. So if it was my ISP, I would be able to connect at school ; all the times I tried it didn't work, and the technician didn't know why.

I know it is working kinda well know, so I should be happy with that. The thing is that I use my computer to call, and watch the news, etc (I don't have a tv...) so when it drops it is really annoying. Plus it's a strange pc behaviour.

If I resume the situation : when it drops, the computer still finds the IP address, but there is no transmission, or at least I cannot receive anything. It has nothing to do with XP firewall or mine, nor with the router, modem or ISP. The tests indicate that the material is fine.

Well. For now, I think I'm going to enjoy the working connection. If it drops again I'll come back for sure.

Thanks for the help anyway, it's really appreciated!

The only other thing I could thing of is a damaged TCP/IP stack, which WinSockFix would restore, but only as a last resort.
