New laptop, LAN problem, connected, but not?

Good Day.

I have a new laptop, Vostro 1500 w/ XP, that I've plugged into my network DSL.  I'm using the Ethernet card which is working at 10Mbps.  It is sending and receiving, but will not open the internet, or link with my server.  I've set up 6 other desktops, running XP, and they all work.  Same process, no results.  I am the admin., and have the system running from router to hub, to ISP.

I set up the network, but cannot get the laptop to link with it.  I pulled the DSL line out of an old PC and plugged it into my laptop, Ethernet card repair link says it "cannot renew the IP address"

"network connection details"   gives an IP  address and a subnet mask.

It is not the laptop, but I don't know what my problem is.  Other than my ignorance.......

I don't know what to try next, do you?

Thank you very much!

Adam

I got a similar problem with an inspiron 640M and it connects nicely by wireless in hotels, bars etc. But it just will not access the internet thru my home wireless network that is a wrt54G v2.2 router from linksys. Despite hours on the linksys chat line we can't get it to work. To be precise it will connect like now through cable and maybe after I unplug the cable will remain connected for a minute or two and then again the internet drops. We have tried resetting, this and that router configs etc. 2 other laptops connect nicely, including one dell. Anybody have had same problem or any advice? Thanks in advance

Has this computer ever been able to connect to the internet?  Is it getting an autoconfiguration IP address (169.254.xxx.xxx)?

Try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here

Hello Steve! I think you've helped me before!

No I have not been able to connect to the internet with this computer.

I bought the same Vostro laptop for my Mom, and was able to hook hers up to a wireless router, with no problem.

My "Local Area Connection Status"   Status says "Limited or no connectivity"  With Packets being sent, but zero received.

And Yes you are correct .....   The IP is 169.254.xxx.xx

In the process of winsockfix....

I thank you again.

Winsockfix Didn't help.   I'm calling Choice One  comm. for help next.  I didn't have a start up disk for the last 6 comp.s I setup, but maybe they have changed something.

Any other suggestions?

Try booting to Safe Mode with Network Support and see if works from there.  If it does, it says that something running from Normal Startup (like a fiewall program, for example) is blocking the connection.

Safe mode does the same thing.

Weird thing is....   My Dell Dimension also gave me a hard time, But for the life of me, I cannot remember what fixed it. I do remember 2 hours on the phone with tech!   I also wrote down what I did, but who knows what happened to that notebook?!?!?

I plugged a HP notebook in, network wizard setup, Online. Simple, and done.

Why do I have such problems with my Dells?  And I own 12 of them?   Once setup, I've had no problems (knock on Wood).

I talked to my ISP,   the router is set to automatically program new IPs for any comp. plugged into my network.   A OK on his end.

I spent an hour with Tech this morning, he said he would call back in 15 minutes, about 3 hours ago......

now after another 1.5 hrs.....   and a system reload,  they want to exchange the 3 laptops I just bought.

I tested another Compaq, and tada....   online, access to my network.

What could this be caused by?

maybe corrupt ethernet cards?

tech. thinks bad motherboards?

But the one for a home setup on the wireless network works fine for now, so we are exchanging only 2 of them.
