New modem ... now what?

Sooo...

For months I've had intermittent connection issues and finally convince Comcast the come out and do something.

The Comcast guy finally finds my house and in about two minutes I can tell this dude is flying in the dark.

He proceeds to check the signal strenth (which apparently is too strong) and then disconnects my old modem that was finally working to replace it with a newer modem that somehow does not communicate with my Ethernet card.

But it does communicate with the computer via the USB connection.  Home sick with Strep and late to a Dr's appt when the guy finally found my place -- late, I ultimately ran the guy off and think I can do better on my own -- albeit, with the type of help I've found here in the past.

End of rant, and here is my question.

If the modem is hooked up to the computer via the USB port (on both the modem and the computer), how do I make the jump to the router to re-setup the network?

The (Linksys) router instructions call for switching (a matching pair of) Ethernet cables.  But the router setup disk does not give me a USB option for the Internet connection.  My gut says I need a crossover cable, but I would prefer to know before I start spendin money.

DSL is in my future ... I can just feel it.

Oops!  Before I create a tangent on my own thread, here is the question again:

Thanks in advance,

Rick

No router that I know of can connect to a cable modem by USB.   You must disconnect the USB cable and then run an ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the router (Note that on some routers, this port is called the Internet port).  The cable you need is not a cross-over cable.  It is a regular ethernet cable.  Make sure that whenever you change the device connecting to the cable modem that you must shut everything down, wait for a about five minutes, turn on the modem first, then wait a few more minutes, and then turn on the device that is connected to the modem, followed by any other devices.
