I want to purchase the Dell v505 wireless printer. My question is will the printer talk directly to my computer or do I need a router

The v505w has a wireless card in it. You can connect with the printer without a wireless router using the adhoc mode but there are many benefits of having a wireless router. No wireless router is required.
Just glance over the installation procedure.

Choose your printer. Beneath your printer, select your operating system. You'll be redirected to another page. Then click on show all steps. It will walk you through the installation process.
