New to Wireless Connection

I just purchased an Inspiron E1405 laptop with and NetGear. I was able to set up the router correctly. When I tried the wireless connection on my laptop, it was able to detect a wireless signal but when I try to connect it, it gives me a message "Connection problem". It says I have to re-enter the security password which I did a couple of times but it still giving me that "connection problem".

Can somebody help me with this?

The first thing to do to troubleshoot this problem is to disable the encryption on the router.  If everything works with encryption disabled, then you know where the problem is.  Then, go back in and re-enable the encryption making sure that you are using the correct encryption key.

You mean literally on the router? How do you do that? Do you mean something on the laptop? I'm having the same problem with my wireless connection :smileysad:

Encryption is set on the router.  To disable it, you have to log on to the router's configuration utility, which is usually accessed by typing the IP address of the router into the address bar of a web browser.

Yes that's what I did, I even changed my password on the router just to make sure that it was not the problem. But wait, I am a DSL yahoo subscriber, do I also have to download the Yahoo browser on the laptop? I was thinking that it could be the reason why I cannot connect since this laptop doesn't have an ISP downloaded on it.

Hi, I'm completely new to wireless connection and live in UK. I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1300 notebook for use as a portable in the house. Our desk PC is an Evesham connected to the internet by broadband "Speedtouch" wired usb modem. The provider is Tiscali.

According to the spec of the Inspiron it has a built-in wireless 802.11 card somewhere (it's not in the card slot!). My question is, what do I need now to connect my two computers up by wireless connection and to the internet?

Thankyou in advance. Edward

Hi Steve,

Thank you, I checked my password, but it wasn't the problem. I followed what the NETGEAR manual said about the TCP/IP thing and it did worked.

You have to have a router in order to use the wireless connection or home networking.
