New User & Home Network Problem

I got my Dell Laptop for Christmas.  I set up the network just like the instructions said [we have cable through hubby's desktop].... I can see my daughter's laptop from my hubby's desktop... I can see my shared files from hubby's laptop.... from my daughter's laptop I can see hubby and my laptop [sorry didn't check for shared files] .... but from my dell laptop I can't see my daughter's laptop or hubby's desktop....

How do I correct that?

I also have some software on my daughter's laptop [my old laptop] that I want to move to this one.... I can't get them to talk to each other.... I tried a telephone cable in between the two... and then I tried the cable I use to connect to the network hub... but they just don't see each other....

How do I correct that?

I quit smoking a couple of weeks before Christmas... but dealing with this has gotten me so frustrated I almost lit up again... so please.... make the tips for someone who is really not computer literate... because I obviously don't know what I am doing...

thanks...

Please explain how your network is set up.  You say that you have internet through your hubby's desktop, but this doesn't make sense if you have more than two computers on the network.  Are you connecting through a router?   Are you connecting through a wired or wireless connection?  Are all firewalls running on all computers configured to allow local network access?  Are all computers running Windows XP?

Note that in Windows, you cannot simply copy programs from one computer to another.  The programs have to be installed from their original CD.  All programs require that entries be made in the Windows Registry and the only way to get them there is by installing the program.  Note also that by default, you cannot share any files under the Windows folder, the Program Files folder, or any folder under Documents and Settings except the the All Users\Documents folder which is the same as the Shared Documents folder.

Some of the first things you may want to check is which Operating System is listed on all the systems. If you have Windows XP Home (Media Center) on your new system. then verify if you have Windows XP Home or Pro on the other systems. If you do then you may have to complete extra steps to get the Three systm to "talk with each other". I have included a link from Microsoft tha might help.
