Newbie question on wireless

Ok, my first wireless connection. I currenly have a Dell Latitude connected in an office room through cable (ISP) its just connected to a external modem. I have another unused setup (modem) in a bedroom. I just purchased an Alienware laptop and a Linksys E3000 High Performance 300Mbps Wireless-N Router .

My question is to set up for wireless in the bedroom, I connect the router to modem to wall? Im aware Id have to configure afterwards and set up a WAP encryption, correct?

Basically correct.  You'll connect the router to your cable modem which then connects to your wall (assuming via coax).  Make sure you have the cable modem and router powered off before connecting them together.  Generally, a cable modem needs to be "reset" to recognize that a new device has been connected in order to give that new device an IP address.

Normally, I'll perform the following:

  1. Power off both devices.
  2. Make sure the cable modem is connected to the wall (ISP).
  3. Connect the cable modem to the WAN/Internet port on your router.
  4. Power on the cable modem and allow it to run through it's boot process.
  5. Power on the router and allow it to do the same.

Once the router finishes it's boot process, you should be able to connect a laptop using another Ethernet cable and start to configure the router.  Normally you can do this by opening a browser window and going to http://192.168.1.1 (default IP address of most routers).  From there you should be able to configure all the settings for your wireless network.
