NIC Problem
Hi,
I have a USB cable modem that I used with my previous PC and now I have recently purchased a dell. It says it has the integrated NIC and it shows up in the device manager as Broadcom400x Integrated Controller. I installed the usual drivers for my USB but I wish to use my Ethernet capabilities now that I have them. When I hook up the ethernet cords no lights blink where my NIC is. Also, It will not connect and tells me that a network cable is unplugged. Is it possible I dont have a NIC? Why is it not working?
Dell Dimension 4600
Thanks,
Caleb

You say you have a USB cable modem - does it also have an ethernet port? Are you sure you are using the correct ethernet cable? A cross-over cable will not work.

I know I have an ethernet port but I had no idea there were different ethernet cables. A generic cable from each ethernet port to the other won't do the job?

Yes, a regular network cable will work. If your cable modem has both an USB port and an ethernet port, make sure that nothing is plugged into the USB port when you try to connect to it by ethernet. Also, reset the cable modem by turning it off for a few minutes, before changing the connection type.
