NMI : PARITY CHECK / MEMORY PARITY ERROR

After all, thank you very much for reading my problem.

I have boguht a Dell Dimension 8400 a month ago. A few days ago I installed an Ovislink wi-fi Netwok adapter pci,  that supports 802.11g+. Wnindows xp detcts my new hardware fine, but it doesnt pass the windows xp  trial logo. It works fine , but only when i shutdown my system, I take the message:

Hardware malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI : PARITY CHECK / MEMORY PARITY ERROR
The system has halted

But after this I suhtdown manually and everything goes fine. If I disable my new card in the windows xp hardware´s configuration tab, I can shut down my system properly

and I´ve tried all the solutions and I´ve allways the same error.

Thank you so much again and please excuse my poor english

Hello,

Your English is ok. Not difficult to understand. :smileyhappy:

Can you use another wi-fi adapter? It might make your life a lot easier than trying to fix this particular problem. The Windows HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) list is made up of hardware items known to work at the time any particular versions of Windows is rolling out into new pcs. Some items that do not met logo certification will sometimes work. Most often it is a driver compatibility issue. This means your version of Windows DOES NOT include a driver for your adapter. Most all (basic) hardware drivers are included in Windows with a few exceptions. That is why I think it might be best to find an adapter that IS on the HCL list and try it instead. Make sure it says: "designed for Windows XP" on a logo stamped on the box BEFORE you buy it.

Chimney,

I disagree with your answer, although it is "textbook" correct. There's lots of hardware, especially NEW stuff, that does not give you the warm fuzzy XP logo. The probloem seems to be with XP not All the different vendors. We see issues with SMC, Linksys, some USB devices, ... I could og on forever, Yet, all is fine with Linux.

Just my 2 cents.

Now back to lurking.....

I disagree.  The blue screen in this case (because I am seeing this also) is a BIOS fault.  NMI checks occur in the BIOS and the problem seems to be related to a false positive on a parity check.  I just installed a DELL BIOS fix for this is exact thing and it didn't fix it.  DELL needs to release a BIOS patch for this that works!
