No Connection after WEP enable

Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension-2400 with Xp/Home connected straight to Verizon DSL Westell 327W Modem/Router(combined), another desktop with Xp/Pro used a Netgear WG111 USB wireless connect to it, but after I enable WEP on Modem/Router, the desktop with Xp/Pro no longer able to connect to internet, signal is very good, I've tried to disable both all firewalls and repaired the connection, but no luck. Is there anyone know why is that and tell me how to fix it? I think I missed some on configuration with Netgear.

more info: when I disable WEP, the desktop with Xp/Pro is able to connect to internet and IP is 192.168.1.46. but when I enable WEP, the desktop with Xp/Pro has the different IP 169.254.43.35. my qestion is; can i change IP#? if so, How?

Steven:

Thank you for quick reply.

Yes, I have they both Router/Modem firmware and USB driver are up to date.  So what else I can do?

The 169.254.43.35 is the IP address that Windows assigns when it cannot get an IP address from the router.  Until it can get an IP address from the router, your wireless connection will not work.  Have you tried upgrading the firmware on your router and upgrading the drivers for your wireless network card?

Are you sure you are entering the hex key on the computer and not the pass code.  If the router and the network card are not from the same manufacturer, you cannot use the pass code.  You must use the hex key.  Have you tried the more secure WPA if both router and network card support it?

Kent,

Unfortunately I can't find much information on the Westell modem on the internet.  Basically a pass code or pass phrase is a simple set of characters that one can use if the router and network card are from the same manufacturer.  The pass phrase gets translated to a hex key which is a set of hexidicmal chacters.  If the router and the network card are not from the same manufacturer, then will not use the same algorithm to generate the hex key.  Thus they will not be able to communicate.  In the router setup, make sure you enter a hex key itself, not a pass phrase, and use the same hex key to set up the network card.

A passkey can be a normal word or a phrase.
The WEP (HEX) key will look like a jumble of alphabets and number. (FD0235AC21)

Thank you all for help.

I've fixed the problem by created Hex key (I used 5 numbers/keys) first with Netgear wireless adapter Utility and then  wrote down 10-code (like CA22CA33CB but gray-out) automatic showed on the Key 1 box after I input 5-hex keys/numbers, and then used those10 codes (CA22CA33CB) for Router/Modem Key 1. So they are communicated each other now.  Especially thanks Steve's hints/clues on the last post.
