no connectivity

I have a Dimension 8400 and just reinstalled XP pro sp1a and am having trouble with the internet.  I have comcast and use a linksys router and usb monitor.  After installing the monitor I could connect to the wireless network but not to the internet.  A friend suggested disconnecting power from the modem and router for five to ten minutes to let them clear.  I did this and when I plugged them back in I had internet for about a minute and a half before it returned to not working.  I would appreciate any help.
thanks,
Stephen

What does a USB Monitor have to do with it?  Do you mean you have a USB wireless network adapter?  If so, did you follow the installation instructions for the wireless adapter?  Normally you need to install the software before you plug in the adapter.   Did you install the chipset drivers before even attempting to install any other device drivers?

not entirely sure what USB wireless adapter means, but I have a little device that picks up the wireless signal and plugs into the USB port, I did follow the instructions for the instalation and that part has no problem connecting to the wireless network, it just doesn't connect to the internet which is working on two other computers in the house.  I didn't even realize that the chipset might have drivers, how would I go about installing those?
thanks,
Stephen

It sounds like you have a USB wireless adapter (not a USB monitor).

Can you get an internet connection if you try connecting to the router by wired ethernet?  This would tell us if it is a general software problem or if it is just a problem with the wireless adapter.

Have you upgraded to SP2?  This adds some important updates to Windows to support wireless networking.

The chipset drivers are required for Windows to recognize and properly install devices that are attached to the motherboard.  If you did not install the chipset drivers before even attempting to install other device drivers, then you are bound to have problems.   (I post this in messages serveral times a day, but I guess I am wasting my time, since few, if any people ever seem to read what I post).
