"No Connectivity"

I have a wireless home system running through a 2-wire router/DSL Modem.  My laptop suddenly went off line with the "no connectivity" message.  All auto fixes failed, apparently because the IP address is now faulty, starting with 169....   The fixer also suggested something could be wrong with the DHCP server, whatever in the heck that is.   It will not connect by ethernet cable either.  My desktop is working fine.  I have found several very old  requests for help with the identical problem, tried all the "fixes" suggested to these people but none worked, for me or for them!  I am pretty technically challenged, so if anyone has an answer, please give it to me step-by-step, or screen-by-screen, whichever applies.  Thanks.

 pawneetrader,

Usually an ip address of 169.154 comes from the wireless router and modem. Power off the ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any). Wait 30 seconds. Turn on the ISP modem router. Wait 15 seconds, the turn on the wireless router(if any). then try to connect.

 pawneetrader,

Ahh, you're using WEP Security! Are you using Mac Address filtering, also? WEP can be hacked and I recommend NOT using Mac Address Filtering unless you know how to add another device.

Try switching to WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security (Personal) Use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11. I would also change the SSID to make connecting easier.

There isn't a wireless device that hasn't been able to connect to my network.

Hi, Rick.  Been there, done that, several times.  Also set the computer back to several hours before it went off line.  Also checked the WEP password.  Still no go.

Ahhhh, Rick, Rick.  It that Chinese you are speaking? Or perhaps Russian?  I have no idea what you are talking about, much less where to go to do any of it.  And remember, this is not a new connection we are talking about.  The affected computer has been talking to my router for several years just fine.  It was in fact on and on line when I went to check something and got all the exclamation points and nasty messages about there being no connectivity even though I had plenty of signal.

Did you try resetting the 2Wire back to factory or defaults?

There's usually a sticker on the bottom which will tell you your wireless password after it's been reset. You'll have to re-enter that password on the bottom of the 2Wire device on the screen when you reconnect to the wireless network.

I have not tried to reset the 2Wire as I would think if it had a problem it would have knocked all the computers off line.  Plus,  I am paranoid about doing anything that might knock this computer off. There are actually 4 numbers on my modem, one is labeled as SN which I assume is the serial number and another is a number/letter combination which I feel may be the model.  The other two are not marked in any way.  One is all digits, the other a series of digits and dashes.
