no dial tone

After a power surge that affected one phone jack in another part of the house, my son's machine keeps giving me an error for no dial tone when he tries to connect. All connections, settings and configurations are correct. Is my modem fried? Any help...

First try the notebook with only it plugged to the line, or from another location (friend's house, work, school, etc.) and see if it works.  If you still get "No Dialtone", then the analog section of the modem is shot and the whole modem needs to be replaced.
