No dial Tone
I have an Inspiron 2650 running Windows XP Home and am having modem problems. The internal modem gives me "no dial tone" message. I have verified I have a dial tone. Modem helper says my modem is not recognizing a dial tone. Device manager says the modem is working properly, but I believe it is dead. Following Dell's advice, I have reinstalled Windows XP. Still, no working modem. So I decided to install a PCMIA modem. My system will not recognize the modem even when I uninstall the internal modem. I have tried a 3Com Megahertz Model 3CCM156B and a Megahertz Model XJ2288. Each of these modems work perfectly in an Averatec 5400 series laptop but my Dell says each is not functional. What can I do?

cleeonroad,
It does sound like your internal modem is dead. If your system is still under warranty, you can contact Dell Tech Support to have your system repaired. If the system is out of warranty, you can get the correct part number for your modem from the Dell Techies and call their Spare Parts people to purchase a replacement. Also, since your question relates to an Inspiron laptop, the best place to post your questions is in the Inspiron discussion forum. You will get many more people there who are familiar with laptops than you will here in the Dimension forum.

BigBrother,
Thank you for your reply. My unit is out of warranty. I would prefer not yo deal further with Dell. Whay can I not install the other modems in the card slot? I have been told that Dell systems will reject non Dell equipment. Is that correct?
I shall also post in Inspiron
Thanks

cleeonroad,
It is correct that Dell systems will accept "non-dell" equipment. You should remove the internal modem from your computer before adding a PCMCIA modem. This will keep the two from being in conflict with each other.
