You need to explain "hard wired" to what--a wireless router, cable or dsl modem with built in wireless? What operating system on the laptop? Does it have the correct password and security settings? Did you set up the network in Network and Sharing Center on the new xps? If you don't have a router--that's your problem. A router splits the Internet access among computers on the network. There is no Internet Connection Sharing with broadband access. You need  a wireless router to share access. You will still be able to connect the xps to one of the ethernet ports on the wireless router since almost all wireless routers have 4 ports for ethernet. If you have an ATT wireless/wired modem with ethernet ports, contact them for instructions on how to set up wireless for additional computers.

Hi Mary: I will try and answer your questions in order:

1.  By hard wired I mean that my internet access is through a cable that comes from a cable modem directly into my Desktop Dell Studeo XPS.

2. My Desktop is running Windows 7

3. The laptop is running Windows 7

4. The laptop uses the correct password and security settings.

5. I set up the network using "Network and Sharing Center.

6. This is where my ignorance comes in:

I have a DW1525 (802.11n) WLAN PCIe Card in the desktop and under my Network Connections it shows the Card and a "Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter".  It also shows a "Local Area Connection" on this LAC is says "shared" .  The laptop can see my wireless network along with other wireless networks of my neighbors.  When the laptop opens my wireless connection and enters the Security Code, it shows a good connection on both my Desktop and the laptop in the respective Network and Sharing Center.  I can see and open files from the laptop on my Desktop and vice versa.  I thought that through this connection that I would be able to have the laptop share the internet connection on my desktop.  Is this where I am going wrong?
