No Internet Connection - Virus Assumed

Hello:

I recently acquired a (new to me) laptop from a family member. Here is a summary of what I have tried to resolve my problem (cannot connect to the internet) The Computer is an Inspiron 1150 Laptop

1. Spoke with my internet service provider over the phone tech suggested the ip address listed when typing ip config was a bad ip address.
2.) Downloaded and ran www.webroot.com/dell - no viruses or spyware found.
(I'm using a mac and jump drive to get installs loaded to the computer)
3.) This laptop had no prior (last known good configurations)
4.) Tried the repair option on the dock icon (status, repair, disable) - Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could be completed Renewing your IP address
5.) ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0.566.0 installed and run on system three items found and remove but were most likely (Aol messenger and Adaware)
6.) I have also tried connecting without the router (just to the cable modem)
7.) Rebooting in Safe Mode with Internet Support
(all with no connection - any suggestions? - thanks)

Can you connect now?

Are you using Intel ProSet wireless to connect or Windows?

1.) Loaded and ran winsockfix - tried a couple times and a couple restarts - same symptoms.
2.) I did not mention I'm using an Ethernet router and cable modem (sorry).

Open device manage and ensure that the adapter is showing up with no red X or yellow ?

try checking your TCIP settings.
Start>Control Panel> Network settings.  right click on Local Area Conection then TCIP select properties and ensure the Obtain IP and DNS settings are set to automatic.

Device Manager - Network Adapters: did not find any red x or yellow x on the network adapter - (right clicked on device said the device is working properly)

In TCIP properties the Obtain IP and DNS settings are set to automatic.

Still no connect - My Local Area Connection has an "inverted yield sign" with (!)
"Limited or no connectivity" (if that helps)
