no internet connection!
hi
just got this inspiron 8200 lap top it is about two years old.
i tried to get on the net but the connection says cable un pluged.
i tried using the eathernet cable on my other dell and it worked just fine.eney idea's
eney one. the only thing i know{if this helps at all} is that it was hooked to dsl,and i have high speed cable.

Are you connecting thru a router or straight to the cable modem? If straight to the cable modem, did you install the cable modem software on the 8200?

Actually I advise against installing any cable modem software on a computer unless it is a USB modem. Otherwise, if you are changing the device connected directly to a cable modem, then you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, turn everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the cable modem first and wait another 5 minutes, then turn on the device connected directly to the modem. Cable modems remember the MAC address of the last device that it was connected to and will only look for a new device after a reset of the modem.
Do the link lights on both the modem and the network card light up when the ethernet cable is plugged in and both devices are powered on? Have you run diagnostics on the ethernet adapter?

thank you gentelman,those were both very helpful.
i'v found that the computer has a bad networking card.
ill proubly just go wireless,since my other laptop is,and that will make this all very simple.
