no internet connection

In the device manager window in the list is a yellow question mark that says other devices. Under that are 2 more yellow question marks:

1. ethernet controller - when I right click, then select properties, the device status window says: the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)

2. multimedia audio controller - when I right click on properties, the device status window says: the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)

I have a Dell Deminsion 4550 with a Toshiba XPC 2200 cable modem. Does anyone know what I can do? I have installed the disc that came with the Dell. Thanks!

It sounds like you failed to install some (or all) of the required drivers for the system when you reinstalled Windows.  The list of required drivers, available from the downloads section of support.dell.com, is:

  • Intel 845PE chipset driver
  • AGP 4X Video Driver
  • ADI integrated audio driver
  • Intel 82559 Integrated NIC driver
  • USB 2.0 Driver
  • Microsoft USB QFE Patch

ok, I went to intel site & downloaded network adapter drivers for windows xp, now the yellow question amrk that said ethernet controller is gone!! Yeah! I can get on the internet, but am not able to type anything in the google search bar & the yellow ? is still there for multimedia audio controller. Is that a Dell thing or an Intel thing?

I apologize for being unclear in my previous post.  You can download all of the drivers (except, possibly, the MS patch) from the Dell support website.
