No Internet No LAN!
I have recently purchased Inspiron 1100 with Windows XP Pro. I used it in my office to connect to LAN. It has Broadcom 440x 10/100 Controller. A week before, all of sudden it stops connecting to LAN. I checked wire, rechecked my LAN settings which are all working well with other office computers. I have tried to reinstall two of its drivers that are packaged with in resource CD but not successful. I will be obliged if someone go through the following troubleshooting info and can propose a solution. Thanks in advance.
- Still I can see Local Area Connection in the Taskbar Icon where its status is enabled.
- I can ping myself i.e. 127.0.0.1/localhost.
- I can acess my shared resources through Start --> RUN and entering here \\myComputerName.
But I can not access my LAN resoruces.
I am using following settings that I checked through ipconfig /all command.

I reinstalled OS on C:\ drive after formatting but this does not work either. I see all visual alerts fine. Network Card light is constantly orange to represent 100MB connection, greed lid keeps on flashing as well right above the network adapter connector.
I tried removing the LAN wire and inserting it in the LAN connector for a number of times but I could not access LAN. I am desperate that I can no more use it in office. I have explored almost entire inspiron community forum I found some similar problems but without any solutions.

Guys! thanks for your message.
Viper, I did the same but that does not work.
John, agreed with Windows unhappy statement. I noticed that the driver's version that are currently on the system and packaged in DELL resource CD is v3.60 (05/15/2003) whereas on the Broadcom manufactures site (forwarded by you) http://www.broadcom.com/drivers/downloaddrivers.php the recent version of Windows XP driver for Broadcom 440 Adapter is v4.23 (11/26/2003), which is obviously recent. I have downloaded the file from URL: http://www.broadcom.com/drivers/driver-sla.php?driver=4401-XP but don't know how to install it since there is no executable file to run the setup.
It is in compressed Zip format and extracting we found three files bcm4sbxp.cat (catalog file), bcm4sbxp.inf, and bcm4sbxp.sys file. Please let me know how to update the drivers using these files.
On the same note I am also thinking that there could be a some missing configurations in the BIOS but don't know whether I am thinking on right lines or not?
Waiting for your response.

John, apology for posting a trivial thing, IT JUST OCCURED TO ME that I can ask the windows to search the extracted location for new drivers after selecting the Broadcom 440x adapter in the HCL list and right click to select update driver option on right-click pop up menu in System Hardware Profile.
I followed the same as mentioned above and successfully updated the drivers. I'll try to connect to LAN in office on Monday to check whether driver update works or not? I will get back to you on this.

1) The problem is not solved by updating drivers to v4.23. I am able to ping another PC or connect to Internet through LAN.
2) Moreover I have run the tests in Broadcom Advanced Control Suite v 6.13 on the Diagnostics tab and noted followings:
TEST PASS/FAIL COMMENTS
------- --------------- -----------------
Control Registers 1/0
MII Registers 1/0
EEPROM 1/0
Internal Memory 1/0
OnChip CPU N/A
Interrupt 1/0
Loop Back - MAC Took long time thus I End Task it.
Loop Back - PHY 0/1
Test LED 1/0
2) I have started conversation with Broadcom People about it.
3)
Really frustrated. What to do?
Please advise.
