No Network Adaptor in Device Danager

I have a Dimension 8250, Windows XP. My hardrive crashed the other day and I replaced it today with a new one. I'm a computer novice. I managed to reinstall Windows XP on the new drive. I also used the Recource CD.

Before the crash I had DSL interent. I have no internet now. I got an instruction sheet from my internet provider on how to get my DSL going again.
It says to open Network Connections in the Control Panel. Then right click on Local Area Connections. There is no Local Area Conncetions icon. The right side of this box is empty. There are no icons in it at all.

When I check Device Manager I have no Network Adaptor showing. The icon says Other devices. Under it it says:
Ethernet Controller
Video Controller
Both of these have the yellow question mark and exclamation mark.

I've kept all the Dell Cd's that came with the computer (at least I think I have them all still). I have the
1)Windows reinstall,
2)Recource CD with device drivers, Diagnostics and utilities, computer documentaion, and
3)For Reinstalling Dell Tools System Software with antivirus software support software multimedia software internet software.
'
Can someone please help me? What do i do now? I have no idea what to look for. PS I'm able to be on the internet because I'm on my daughters computer.
Thanks
Don

Seems like Windows can't find the drivers for your Video & Network Card.

Go to this page -> http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8250&os=WW1&osl=EN

Download your Video driver under the section called "Video Adapter" and your Network Card under "Network". I see their's many choices so if you don't know your exact make/model of the 2 parts then check your order sheet when you purchased your computer. If not, give a call to Dell Tech Support and with the Express Service Code or Service Tag they should have the specs for your machine.

Since the machine has no internet connection you'll need to download the drivers on another machine and bring it over using a burned cd or USB jump drive. Note: Don't run the downloaded files on the machine which has an active internet connection since it will copy the contents to C:\Dell

Hope this helps.

dlwade,

Before following MACHADO's advice, make sure you install the chipset drivers.  Without the chipset drivers the other drivers will not properly install.

Thanks for the quick reponses

I'm sending this on my computer!!!

I was apparently reading the Resource CD wrong. Each section would have some of the contents check marked. If you scroll over the check marked item it would say that a hardware scan detected the presence of this device.  Thats what the Network Driver and Intel 800 Chipset both said.  I thought that meant they were already installed on my computer.

Once I installed the chipset, I installed the Network driver and set up the internet. I'm gonna work on the Video Adaptor next.  Then I start on the others...download the XP service pack 2,  reinstall Norton Antivirus etc.

Thanks again for your help

I have a Dell Dimension 8400, Windows XP. I had the same problem: My hard drive crashed the other day and I replaced it today with a new one. I reinstalled Windows XP on the new drive. I also used the Recource CD.

I have also gone to the Dell site and downloaded the chipset driver and the Broadcom integrated controller onto a CD and installed that.

When I look at the Device Manger under My Computer properties, I can see the Broadcam Controller listed under Network Adapters.

Prior to the crash I had DSL Internet access. I am currently not able to access the internet. It is not an issue with my cable access or internet provider as I am using them with no problems on a temp machine.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
