No Network on Dell Laptop
My Inspiron Laptop has no network connection - wired or wireless.
Clicking on the wireless button reveals that it has 'limited' access. Checking device manager for Dell Wireless 1701 802.11b/g/n reveals device is working properly. Troubleshooter says 'there might be a problem with the driver for the wireless connection adapter.'
Do I re-install the driver?

Went to find updated driver to download and the only one I could find said that it would automatically self-install after download. I am looking to download to my desktop and port to my diabled laptop. Not possible?

Hi GBHost,
I would advise you to check if you are able to connect to the Internet using a known good computer. I would like to know if you are seeing red X on the Internet icon at the task bar.
Also, Please perform the following steps to check if your system is receiving an IP address from the ISP.
1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
2. In the results area, click open cmd.exe.
3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ipconfig /all
4. Please check for the IP address under ‘Ethernet adapter Local area connection’ and ‘Wireless adapter Local area connection’.
5. If the IP address is starting with 169.XXX.XX.XX. I would advise long power cycle. Please follow the steps for long power cycle.
12. Switch off the computer, Router and Modem.
13. Turn on the Modem after 1 minute.
14. Turn on the Router after 1 minute.
15. Turn on the computer after 1 minute.
In addition, In Command prompt screen (black screen). Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
Netsh Winsock Reset
Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks Dell Ravi Ch,
We have several other wireless devices in the house. All work except this laptop. There is no red X, we've turned that function key on and off several times.
Results of ipconfig/all reveals only:
Ethernet adapter bluetooth nework connection 2 (no ip addresses listed, just physical address)
Tunnel Adapter isatap
Tunnel adapter teredo tunneling pseudo-interface
Nothing about 'ethernet adapter local area connection' or 'wireless adapter local area connection'
I tried running the netsh command and received the reply that I cannot run the command without administrator rights.

Hi GBHost,
I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the Wireless card driver on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, and click on ‘Get drivers and downloads’then download the wireless card driver from Network section onto the Desktop screen on a different system.
http://dell.to/18r60nI
Please follow the steps mentioned below to uninstall the wireless card.
1. Click on Start button.
2. In the search box type, devmgmt.msc and then press enter.
3. Select the wireless card and Bluetooth device under Network Adapter and right click on it
4. Now select properties.
5. In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.
6. Check “Delete the driver software for this device.”
7. You want to delete the driver click OK.
After the uninstall finishes restart the system and install the drivers by using the file downloaded on the desktop screen.
Please let me know if this helps.

Entered disabled machine's service tag and downloaded network driver. Copied to thumb drive, ported, installed, restarted. It seems something didn't work, as when I rerun devmgmt.msc, it appears that there is no network at all any more. I don't see the bars anymore in my taskbar. So at this point not only does the network not work, it seems to be absent.

First of all, check your network connectivity performance. If the problem is there it will save you time and headaches. To make a network scan go to www.netscan.co and push the big green button. After the test are done, it will take seconds, you will receive a unique URL, share it back.
