No or Low Connectivity When Using Ethernet

I just got my Inspiron 6000.  It's got the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated controller for ethernet.  When I tried taking the ethernet cord out of my desktop(which connects to the internet fine) and putting it into my laptop, the laptop states that it has low or no connectivity.  I tried to repair said network connection but it always fails on the renewing IP address stage.  So, I have no idea what the problem is.

Tried reinstalling the driver, checked the device under device manager, said it was ok, so like I said, I have no idea.

What are you connecting to?  If is is a cable modem without an intervening router, Note that whenever you change the device connected to a cable modem you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem.

I'm having the same problem also with my Inspiron 6000. I keep getting Low or no connectivity. renewing IP address also fails. I even tried uninstalling then reinstalling all the network drivers, but did not work. I even reinstalled /Repaired my Windows XP operating system it did not solve the problem. Also I downloaded the current Broadcom440x 10/100 integrated controller driver for the dell service web site and still no luck.  I still have not a clue to what's going on..

Ok, I got it working now.

If you have any virus protection programs installed try configuring the options so that it will accept you internet IP address. If you don't know how to do this then try uninstalling all virus programs to see if this was the problem. For me it was the Nortin's Internet Security Package. Once uninstalled I rebooted and my Windows Network was able to repair my internet IP address..
