No program can access the internet, even though connection is ok

Question

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!.............I have been trying for 3 weeks now to sort out this problem!!!  When I connect to the internet, using my Speddtouch 330 modem, it connects fine.  But when I open IE6 and try to browse the Internet I get a message saying, 'Please wait while you are being redirected'  The URL it tries to redirect me to is my ISP's Broadband Help page (TalkTalk), but even that won't open.  This also happens in Firefox2, as I was using this before.    Also, any other program that accesses the internet, such as, Mcafee(for updates) will not connect.  I have run Hijackthis, Windows Defender with no success.  I have phoned my ISP and they ran through the, delete cookies, delete files routine to no avail.  I even rolled back to a Ghost image of the original dell setup, but the problem still persists.  I am on the verge of formatting the drive and starting again, but having not got the system disks off dell when I purchased the PC, this will be hard.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can you access the modem setup page?   Have you tried resetting the modem?

The documentation you received with the modem would have the specifics, but you will need a wired connection and Internet Explorer to an address like:   http://192.168.1.1

How would I get to the modem setup page. Through control panel?  The lights on the modem are functioning as normal (no red or flashing lights)

Don't care so much about Internet explorer, ok? It can sometimes show you even a bare :-) What you need to do is check your LAN cable first. Is it connected to the modem? are lights on the modem blinking? if yes - lets see your computer.... Start -> Settings - Control panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device manager (or simply the Windows button + Pause button on the keyboard). Do you see you Network adapter there? Are some other devices showing yellow exclamation marks? If there is everything ok then we can go to next step. Start -> Run -> cmd (and Enter at the end of coure ;-) run ipconfig and write down what IP adresss and gateway it shows, we would like to know :-)

The first post stated he had a connection to the modem/router.  So with that, a bad cable is out of the mix.

ok ok, I'm sorry if I sound like Eircoms indian support (solly sil, please check se cable between louter and computel) :-) but sometimes even the lights in network card don't mean that there is actual connection. I have seen a network card that showed connection with 1. and 2. wire connected. And when I came to Ireland I noticed what patch cables Europes routers,switches,etc. are using... WOOOOW. I make better ones at home with 25$ tool. So just in case, i want to know if the cable is really ok. But thats to check only in paranoya situations if NOTHING else is fault.:smileywink:

YOu have a good connection to the modem/router so evidently the only thing that is wrong is the configuration.  Rest the modem but you will need to know your username and password if this is a DSL modem.   If you are connecting wirelessly, please disbale all encryption until this is straightened out.

the modem is usb, checked all cables, they seem fine.............tried winsockfix last night, but to no avail?!?!?!?!   very tempted to wipe the system, but will lose 250gb of music and videos!!!!!  ARRRGH

If you are really sure that the Windows is fine and clean, lets try the modem settings. So, what IP do you get from the modem? What is modem IP? Something like 192.168.x.x ? I allready wrote you what information we need to help you, you didn't give us that info. So - can't help you.
