You need to create a home network for yourself and configure the wireless router to it. There are usually instructions for doing this in the router's user guide on the installation CD.

enable the access point in the d-link web setup by opening 10.1.1.1 in explorer...

then follow the d-link user manaual from www.dlink.com for your particular router it should only take a few minutes to setup + a reboot of your router

i'd also activate wpa-psk or wpa 2 encryption, again this is covered in your d-link manual...

... to add, my d-link router will only allow my pc to change settings to it if its pluged into the #1 lan port on the router and will not allow me to change settings via wireless

Some quick notes:
This happens to me a lot at home with my work laptop.
You need to do the following if you've set up your wireless as the folks above have stated.
1. turn on latest version of ProSet for the 2100
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?&DwnldID=11292&ProductID=944
2. review ProSet instructions from Dell
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?journalid=A0E0350C5F1D11DBBB94C930E760DE56&docid=294827
3. Move your neighbors listing below your own in ProSet (This way you'll connect to your connection first...)

In case you're having overload on howto set up your home netwrok:
Take a look at this link from Dell, very well thought out;
