To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

You are not getting a valid IP address, thus you are not making a connection with the interet.  First try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here and if that doesn't work try lspfix from Here.  If that doesn't work, go into Network Connections and remove the Toredo Tunneling Adpater.  I've seen that mess up the internet connection.  Is there a reason why you have that installed?

Thanks Steve I will try the downloads you suggest. I have no idea about the Toredo Tunneling Adpater and why it is installed. But I believe I may have an idea about the reasons for my problems. I recently cancelled my dial up connection for a braud band wireless modem solution. When the deactivation of the dial up took affect was about the time of my problem. The ISP for dial up had given me a speed up program, called rocket access, that I believe is causing my issues. I will let you know if things get fixed after running the downloads. Thanks again for your help. PS I am going to contact the dial up isp and let them know what kind of problems they caused me. oh how do I get rid of the Toredo Tunneling Adpater?

I have no idea how this got installed on your computer (I don't have it on any of mine).  But it comes as a part of IPv6.   A FAQ that contains instructions for removal can be found at:

See if your dhcp client service is running.  To do this go to Start > Run and type services.msc then hit the Enter key.   Find the dhcp client service in the list, double click on it, then make sure it is running and set to autostart.

Steve,

DHCP Client is running and set to automatice.  I also noticed that after I performed the fixes you listed and removed the IPv6 stuff the ipconfig/all report was significantly different from when I ran it the first time.  The report stopped after Default Gateway:  I noticed in another message thread that you said this was not the complete file, however the information I had returned was the same status as the report listed in that message.  Is it just me or is this problem one that is occuring a lot since the end of March???

I have done the system restore and have not added any of the critical updates in a couple of months.  Should I resort to having the system wiped and reloaded?  I am about at my wits end.  Do I have any other options?

I don't think it is a general problem (I have many different computers that I am in charge of and none have had this problem), but a recent Windows critical update has caused a lot of other problems).  I suppose one way to test this possibility is to either use System Restore to go back to a point before you started having the problem or to use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the most recent Windows Critical updates and see if the problem then goes away.

I noticed many hits on this subject, even though it was posted some time ago.  I had the exact same problem and after reviewing all my installation steps, I noted I put the WEP password under the Passphrase, instead of manually entering the WEP key.  Very simple fix and it worked just fine after that correction.

WHere can we fix the WEP key under Passphrase?

In my case, the computer I am currently configuring uses a netgear wireless card.  Their configuration software (where you can see networks available to connect to) under settings shows your network name (SSID) and the security settings.  If you are using WEP security (versus WPA), that should be selected.  Under WEP are two selections - create with passphrase  or enter key manually.  Initially I entered my password under the "create with passphrase".  I unselected it, selected "enter key manually" and entered my password there.

This is what corrected my problem.  Hope it helps yours!
