not connecting
I have 3 computers running. Computer #1 has Win98 on it and is the one with the main cable modem connection. The other two computers go through a router and are running are WinXP. I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows 98 on computer #1, and now Computer #1 will not connect to the internet nor recognize any connection. However the other two computers, that go through the router are connecting. Everything is plugged in and lights are all on. anyone know what to do?

Why is one computer connecting to the cable modem and the others connecting to the router. Normally all computers should be connecting through the router in order to share an internet connection.

Make sure all computers are connect to the LAN ports on the router and the WAN port on the router is connected to the cable modem (it sounds like this connection is correct). Reboot the computer that is not working and go to Start > Run and type winipcfg then click on OK. Maker sure that the ethernet connection is selected (not the ppp connection). What IP address is the computer getting? It should be in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx

My question was not whether or not any of the computers are getting that error message. My question was and still is "Are you sure all of your computers are set to obtain an IP address automically?

If you keep getting this error message, it either means that one of the computers on your network has a hard coded IP address that conflicts with the router or that the router is bad and is assigning the wrong IP addresses to the computers. A linksys router has the IP address 192.168.1.1, so it should not be giving that address to any of the computers on the network. If it is, then the router is bad. Are you sure all of your computers are set to obtain an IP address automically?

On the computer that is not connecting, go to Network Properties, select the TCP/IP protocol that is associated with the network card and remove it. Reboot the computer, go back to Network Properties, then Add the TCP/IP protocol back. Once its back, go to Properties and make sure it is set to obtain an IP address automically. Reboot again and see if you have a valid IP address and if the connection now works.
