Odd Connection problem

Ok, this may be kinda long but bare with me.. I want to give as much info as I can.

I have a second pc that I recently reformatted because of HD problems. I reinstalled the Win XP. I then went and downloaded (from another pc onto a cd) and installed the chipset driver as well as the LAN, sound and video drivers. I then installed a wireless usb adapter to get internet access. Now while it finds my network, logs me on and says connected with a strong signal, I am unable to access the internet. Originally it wouldn't find an IP automatically. I have talked to both my wireless adapter tech support and my internet provider tech support and have manually entered in an IP. Neither can figure out what the problem is although now I am able to ping out as before I was unable to do so. If I go to my router settings on my main pc and look at "My Network" it sees my second pc, so I don't think it is the problem. I have even directly connected the problem pc to the router with an ethernet cable but same thing, no internet. I am baffled. I double checked and it says the firewall is not on. I have not installed any virus programs onto the pc yet either.  I am tempted to just reformat again in case something went wrong.
Anyone have any ideas?

Dell machines have a proprietary device driver installation order, after the installation of a Windows OS. See here for the installation order.
Also, if you could include your machine model # and operating system in your post, it would help?

I was really hoping you wouldn't ask that =/ LOL I don't have a Dell but found this site when doing a search for my problem. I was hoping someone would help me anyways. As far as the device driver installation order, I believe I installed the chipset driver first, then the others I don't know what order I installed them in.

If you don't have a Dell system, the driver installation order is only pertinent to Dell machines. So, the installation order is a moot point. (Check your messages at envelope at top of Forum page)

It is not true that the driver installation order is only pertinent to Dell Machines.  Any machine that uses an Intel chipset and was manufactured after the initial release of Windows XP, will not have the chipset drivers native to Windows.   Thus the chipset drivers will be required unless the machine was originally avialable before the initial release of Windows XP.   This may also apply to other chipsets if such drivers are required for the motherboard.

Its actually a built computer. I downloaded a winsock fix program and after messing with it I am able to get it online now. I just hope it lasts awhile LOL. Thank you though. Not many people want to take the time to help people out.

Let me ask a quick question.. My dad just had verizon FIOS installed and now they have him hooked straight up to a wireless router, no cable modem in the mix. Is this going to affect the way I set up a network?

Or should I be posting this in another folder?

I'm going to push it now and see if I can get his 3 pcs networked to share files. I attempted this once before but gave up. I may be back ;)
