I have reloaded Windows 2000 and XP numerous times on various Dell PCs using the Dell OS discs without a problem.

As to Wordperfect, I received a dics with my laptop, but I have never used it since OpenOffice which is free works fine for my needs.

Info ...

3 Computers ... 2 Desktops 1 LapTop (Inspiron)

Initial problem a virus attack not caught by antivirus, and not cleanable by major antivirus programs on the Inspiron.

Solution ... Reload OEM software provided with the computer.

Problem ... the OEM OS CD provided for the Inspiron Laptop does not work. Of course it  never would have worked. It was bad when it departed Dell. Solution ... use the OEM OS CD that came with the Desktop purchased at the same time as the Laptop. Solution worked.

Due to the effects of the virus and the reload, Program manager has no listing for many of the programs that  were on computer, and others don't work. Solution ... reload the software. So now I try to reload the OEM Word Perfect productivity pack, and it does not work. That OEM software shipped with the Laptop as well.

One bad CD a fluke. Two out of four makes me wonder how bad of a problem this is at Dell. This is a problem likely to be caught after the service period is up, when Dell is only to happy to charge you by the hour to talk about why they provided you with a bad product. I was wondering if others were aware of the problem with OEM software provided by Dell, and to what measures the consumer needed to go to, to prevent finding this out only when too late.

Fortunately for me in this case, I had bought two Dells at the same time, and the OEM OS worked with the other computer. I have not checked if the Desktop came with the same OEM Word Perfect.

Now  my wife tells me the other Desktop has a bad virus issue, and she will likely have to reload. All the Microsoft programs fail to operate, or say "Application not found."

are you aware of the Factory Restore function which will bring your system back to the same state as the first time you fired it up.

"does not work" ... exactly as stated ...

Fails to load the software ...

CD works as a coaster, works as a frisbie, but not as a media storage/retrieval device.

Operator was sufficient to load OS from the desktop's CDs.

If you can load one you can load the other ... but only as long as the CD "works."

Me thinks a thinker would have thought of that.

Thank you Davet50 (I am a USN vet) ... for your helpful post.

My initial attempt on the Laptop was to restore the OS with out losing all the other programs.  By using the OEM from the desktop, I was able to restore the OS and kept some data and programs, not possible by using the Factory Restore. Unfortunately it appears that I will have to reinstall some of the programs as well.

For my wife's computer, I will recommend that she use the Factory Restore, after backing up her data. Her OS is still functional so that is at the moment an available option for her, unlike the laptops.
