Why would you need to use a Windows XP CD to configure the network on you Compaq running Windows 98?  You're not trying to use Internet Connection Sharing are you?  It is not necessary with a router.  All you should need to do on the Compaq is to set the TCP/IP properties to Obtain an IP address automatically.  If Internet Connection Sharing is enabled on any of the computers, disable it.

It is configured to retrieve IP address automatically. But it still doesnt work! So frustrating.

Do the link lights on both the network card and port on the router into which the network cable is plugged light up?  Has this network card ever worked before?  Did the network card come with diagnostic software you can run to see if it is functioning properly?

Hmm... odd... it works fine now. Now the only problem is that I cant print from my old Compaq with the printer attached to the Dell. Always an error with "spool32". Darn...

What is the exact text of the error message?  Do you have the correct Windows 98 drivers for the printer installed on the Compaq?

had the same problem here.....Linksys router, befsr41, installed all the stuff, and the two puters wouldnt recognize one another....heres what I did.....DISable ICF, and make sure you ENable printers and/or drives on the puters which you want to share, it works now, very well...Thing is, ICF is afirewall, so you are opening yourself more easily to hackers.......

ICF is disabled. However, I do use Sygate and Zonealarm on my two computers. I set it up so that the comps can access each other tho. Except printing is messed up. I ll try to figure something out... :S
