On and Off

I recently networked a new computer to a router box and just about every 2 or 3 hours the connection is lost either on one or both.  I simply fix the problem by unplugging the cable and plugging it back it.  But still the problem persists.  What's wrong with my connection?

Which cable are you unplugging?  Which make and model router is it?  Is the router connecting to a cable or a dsl modem?  When you lose the connection, can you do an ipconfig /release /renew from the command prompt window to get it back?  If you connect directly to the modem do you see this same problem?

The computer is connected to a Toshiba Cable Modem, but not through the USB port which the primary connection.  Sometimes when I unplug both cables and just plug the USB in it works or sometimes I unplug the power from the back of the modem and leave the USB in and when I plug the power back in it works.  But I usually can't get it back online with the second connection still plugged in, I have to plug it in after I get a connection through the USB.

Does this help?

I figured that the reason that the connection was turning off was because the network was working too hard and the fact that it wasn't the main connection made it reset the server.  I also came to the solution of just unplugging the power from the back of the cable modem and plugging it back in works.  But now I can only run Internet Explorer, I used to be able to use a messaging program and games as well.  Do I need to do some proper configuration of my network so I can run all programs?
