Which version of Windows are you running? Which network adapter do you have? Is it a mini PCI card or a PC card? Has the network adapter worked before, or is this the first time you have tried to use it? Have you recently reinstalled Windows?

I am running windows 2000 professional.

I just installed windows.

I tried windowsXP and windows ME as well, but neither showed the ethernet card.

The ethernet port is built into the computer. It is right next to the phone jack for the modem.

I just got the laptop, so I never saw it working, I cant imagine why it would be out like it seems to be though.

you think that will work even though the system does not even detect the hardware? Its not shown in the device manager , not even under unkown devices..

Are you sure the Mini PCI card is actually in the Mini PCI card slot? If there is no card in the Mini PCI slot, then you don't have an ethernet adapter, despite the fact that the RJ45 connector is present on the back of the computer. To locate the Mini PCI slot, see Here

since you just installed Windows, it is likely that you did not install the drivers for the ethernet adapter. Assuming that the ethernet adaper is on a mini PCI card, you might want to try installing the drivers from the Dell Support site Here.
