onboard ethernet card problems
I just reformatted my other computer, it's a dell dimension 4600. For some reason it doesn't seem to detect that I have an integrated ethernet card. When I look into network connections it says i have a 1394 network adapter and it says that it is enabled and the speed is 400mbps. I was under the impression that that was a firewire connection. Either way, when I try to install my dsl modem on that computer, it cannot find my ethernet card. I do not know if i need a specific driver for this or what. Any help would be much appreciated.

All kinds of bad things can happen if the chipset drivers are not the first drivers installed after reinstallaton of Windows. First go into Device Manager and click the + sign next to Network Adapters. Is the ethnernet controller card listed there and does it show that it has no problems? Second, why are you installing software for the dsl modem. dsl and cable modems under Windows XP do not require any software. Note that if you did not install the chipset drivers first, you may have to start over.

The reason you can't see the integrated network adapter is because it is integrated on the motherboard and you cannot see any motherboard devices until you first install the chipset drivers. Once the chipset drivers are installed, you will be able to install the drivers for the integrated network adapter.
