You give us very little information (which model computer, which network card, which version of windows, etc.).  Nevertheless, most onboard ethernet network cards are 10/100, which means that they have transfer speeds of 10 Mbps or 100 Mpbs.   The fastest broadband internet speed I have seen advertised is 16 Mbps, well below the 100 Mbps of internal network cards.  Thus, I seriously doubt that getting a different network card would give you any faster speeds when connecting to the internet.   If you are talking about connected computers on a local network, and if you have a 1000 Mbps router or hub and the other computers all have 1000 Mbps network cards, then yes you would see significant improvement in file transfer speeds, but only on the local network.

ok well you dont need any of my info, because you just answerd my question. thank you very much for your help, and your quick response. i am just trying to get the most out of my internet connection as i can. i guess i'm being real picky though. i have a 3mb verizon dsl connection, and when i test it at bandwidthplace.c0m it says i am getting 2.7mb for a dl speed! i wonder if i can get it to 3mb some how......

2.7 Mbps is pretty good for an advertised speed of 3.0 Mbps.   You also have to consider all of the servers between you and the speed test site.   If you were connecting directly to a server at your ISP you would probably get 3 Mbps.  A new network card will not get you any faster speed.
