onboard nic not working

using win2k on a dimension 8200 and an onboard cnet pro200wl nic with a dsl connection. the nic has apparently stopped working, i cant get online and after an hour of trying i have sent 29packets and rec'd 19, so it really aint workin. i have refreshed the driver, even did a system repair, put a laptop on the modem and it worked fine, so the wiring/cabling,modem are good. my only conclusion is that its the nic itself (i have verified that it is NOT currently disabled in the bios). my thought process is now to disable the onboard nic and install a pci ethernet card and update the drivers from that package. #1 did i miss anything in my troubleshooting activity? is this plan to disable the onboard nic and install a pci card a good idea, i have run antispyware ( 4 different programs - adaware, spybot, ewido and spysweeper, and antivirus defs are current and its active. i am at my wits end and need to know whether i should proceed with the swap out i mentioned earlier. tkz for your help, aloha

could be something with the desktop not authenticating correctly with the DSL and that's why you're not getting much traffic.  try connecting the desktop to the notebook with a crossover cable (or with normal cables if you have a switch in between) and see if you can exchange stuff between the two computers.

it doesn't have to be just like the above but the goal would be to test the NIC on another connection -- preferably a local LAN connection that you have absolute controll over.
