Only partial internet connectivity restored after troubleshooting Mcafee update...

Hello

My internet connection suddenly stopped working after critical updates were installed by Mcafee. I have tried everything I can via logging on to support and going through their trouble shooting pages. I have also spent  several hours to my internet provider but the problem does not lie there, as all other laptops and computers are logging on perfectly. I reinstalled my mcafee as suggested and have run the virtual technician as requested by the Dell support pages. . Still no joy. I have managed to get my laptop connected to an ethernet cable but still cannot get the wireless connection to run.  I don't know what else to do as I am not computer literate and this is as far as my ability goes. Any help will be gratefully received.

Hello and thank you for the reply. I have tried the first link and nothing has worked from that. I have got the ipconfig all list ready to copy here but have read  that i should not include my computers id number.... is it on that ipconfig all list or is it safe to post result straight to here? My virus and firewall are mcafee (with windows 7.)

shreenie,

Post the Finding System Information if you can, just remove the product id. If you accidentally post something, I have editing capabilities, so I'll remove any information that should not be there.

If you cannot run Finding System Information, then run an ipconfig /all log.

shreenie,

Try reading...

Software Updates Causes Wireless Connectivity Issue Or Unable to Connect to Internet

If the article does not help solve the problem, Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID, if using XP, run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

Also include the virus program and firewall you're using.

Hello Rick-

I have set my laptop to the power plan as you suggested. On reading the intel recommended settings link I have noticed it does not support wep which is what our router is configured to. I would rather not reconfigure the wep as all our other devices run perfectly well on it. Is this a problem in your opinion? (I said I was computer illiterate! )

Thank you and look forward to your reply.

Hi Rick.  Thank you for your help.  This is Mike, Shreenie's other half.  We've just spent the last 3 hours on the phone to Dell and TalkTalk and still got nowhere.  The Netgear Router is set to WEP rather than WPA.  Dell say that if we change it to WPA then the security will be higher and this laptop will be able to get online.  However, we did that with the help of TalkTalk and none of our devices would recognise the new password and setup and wouldn't go online.  So I've now changed it back to WEP and all but this one can get online again.  Any suggestions as to what else might be the problem.  Everyone is blaming someone else!

Mike,

If at any time you need help, feel free to ask.

Option 1.

I think this is the real problem. Read the instruction carefully.

Software Updates Causes Wireless Connectivity Issue Or Unable to Connect to Internet

Option 2.

Start, control panel, network and sharing, manage network connections, right click on your network and left click remove. I would restart the computer and try to connect.

Option 3.

Make a new SSID to make connecting easier. What devices are having problems connecting to WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security(Personal)? I use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11 and have no problems with any wirelessd evices. I have a wireless printer, 3 cell phones, and many laptops connected to my network with no problems. XP machines need XP SP2 or XP SP3 in able to connect with WPA-PSK(TKIP)Securuty (Personal)

Here are the instructions for Linksys but netgear should be similar, I used to own a Netgear.

Your setup should look like...

wall > Cable modem/router > wireless router > wired/wireless

Press and hold the little reset button in the back of the wireless
router for 60 seconds. This will reset the wireless router back to
factory.

Plug the ethernet cable in to a numbered port of the wireless router, then run ipconfig /all

Alternate method= Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. Type

cmd

hit enter. Type

ipconfig /all          (space between the g and / )

hit enter

Look for the default gateway. It should look something like 192.168.1.1 or similar.

Open Internet Explorer. In the address bar, put the numbers of the default gateway in the address bar and hit enter.

You should be asked for a username and password. Try...

Username = admin

Password =  (blank) Do not put anything here and click enter or password.

but
these can vary on the manufacturer. Please consult your wireless
routers installation instructions for the correct information.

This
is the basic username and password unless stated differently in the
user manual. Please consult the user manual for the correct username and
password. If you changed the username and password, then you'll need to
use the correct one.

You should then see a setup screen.

Click on wireless, basic settings

Here I use Mixed mode, my network name is Virus_Farm and I use
channel 11. Use the same settings except change the Network name to a
new name, like Your_Network. (You cannot have any spaces)

Save settings.

Now click on Wireless security. you see...

Use WPA Personal

Enter your 13 character password when I have your13characterpassword, then click on save settings.

This will be the password needed to login to the Your_Network network.

Click on wireless mac filter and make sure it's disabled.

Save Settings and close Internet Explorer.

Power down the cable modem/router and the Linksys. Wait 60 seconds,
the turn on the cable modem. Wait 15 seconds and turn on the Linksys.
