The computer came with Windows 7 installed.
There is no virus program installed and I haven't installed any firewall since it was opened. I see no evidence of a firewall.

I grabbed an old dusty belkin usb wifi adaptor, stuck the driver software on and now its running online. Time to install some security software and get things going.

Mystery may be solved but the speed it is downloading at is pretty bad. The computer is being completely outpaced by my 4 year old laptop. Both the computer and laptop have connection speeds of around 50-60Mbps. Yet the computer clearly isn't running at that speed. It took about 20 seconds to load the google homepage.
Not good.
