OptiPlex GX1 onboard NIC

About a week ago I purchased a second-hand Optiplex GX1 system. I just tonight purchased a 10 metre Cat 5e patch cable to connect this machine to my ADSL router (a Billion BIPAC 711CE, which uses a Conexant chipset.) This system has an inbuilt 3Com network card.

The computer system (running Windows 2000) reports 'Network cable unplugged.' The lights next to the network port are off, and the router shows no LAN activity. I don't believe the router is at fault as its USB interface is functioning perfectly on another computer (I've tried disabling the USB and just having the Ethernet interface active, but that didn't work either.)

I tried another network cable (although it was a crossover cable) and it didn't work. I flashed the machine's BIOS to the latest version, and I tried many different drivers for the NIC.

Has anybody got any ideas as to what could be the problem?

Have you tried running the Dell Diagnostics to test for NIC functionality?  Details are in the system documentation for the unit, which can be reviewed/downloaded here:

Another outside chance might be that the NIC is disabled within System Setup, so restoring the setup defaults might resolve the problem, since it's enabled by default.

If you have more questions, please post the Service Tag ID for the unit, as the suggested fixes may vary, depending on the form factor involved.  The tag ID should be on a label on the case, or in System Setup, or both.

Most cable modems use a crossover cable instead of a straight thru.

You should get a linksys firewall BEFSR41

Manufacturer Part# BEFSR41
Dell Part# A0043560
