Is there a way to monitor network traffic (i.e., with managed switches)? If so, check the traffic flow during a read, and then a write. Do the link lights on both ends remain on when the system freezes? Does the file on the server system remain locked?
Are you running Norton Antivirus? If you are, is it set to realtime protection? Anti-virus scanning can cause up to a five minute delay when accessing files over the network.
Check to see if Spanning Tree is enabled on your network switches. I had the same prob. 2K was fine. XP is slow, DNS and DC event I.D.s generated. I disabled Spanning Tree on my Cisco switches and the issue went away.
I have a SX260 with a simlar problem running WXPP connecting to SBS2000 server in a small office. The problem starts after about 48 hours of the system being logged on. When accessing mapped network drives it takes up to five minutes to access a file and then preformance is really slow as with typing takes 5 to 10 seconds pre word.
Accessing e-mail, browsing the web, connecting to the two other systems on the network is find.
We're experiencing this exact problem other than the fact that we're using a netware 6 sp3 file server. Our first batch of 260's worked fine although everything since then has been giving us this problem.
I've checked configs on the switches (cisco 4003 and cat 2950's) played with STP and portfast settings. We've tried driver updates, reinstall of the OS (which seems to work temporarily), replacing the NIC with a 10/100 card (again a temporary fix), different server mappings as well as different server configs. (had no effect) Our other client machines (gateway and compaq computers running various incarnations of windows) work properly. The new Dells are the only ones experiencing this problem.
The gx260/70's seem to have a problem with passing over the cisco equipment. In taking the PC's to a different location (with 3com switches) this situation does not occur.
Has anyone resolved this issue? What steps did you go through to resolve it?
I am having a similar issue. I see lag times talking with a new NW6.1SP3 box. I found this only happens on GX240's & GX260's (so far) and I can not make it happen on GX110's!! I have CISCO routers and switches. I do not have the problem talking to an older NW5.1SP5 box. And the problem does not always happen!! This is making is really hard to track down. A packet trace show that there is a 5 to 6 Mil delay in sending some packets from the Server to the WS. I have already worked with Novell and Compaq. I have applied patched, changed HW, and removed my sanity!! If anyone has idea's, fixes, etc., please post them!!
I've actualy set up another NW6 server in a test environment, and with a simple netgear switch everything works properly. I've gone so far as to take one of these PC's that's having trouble to a different location (using 3com switches and a different nw6 file server) everything works fine there, but as soon as I map a drive to any server that causes me to pass through the cisco 4003 I have this problem. (It happens to multiple servers, not just one)
In the following situations we have trouble: Dell gx260 --> Cat 2950 --> Cat 4003 --> NW6 server Dell gx260 --> Cat 4003 --> NW6 server Dell gx260 --> 3COM switch --> Cisco 3640 router --> Adtran at location 1 --> Adtran at location 2 --> Cat 4003 --> NW6 server (over the WAN)
The only time we don't have trouble is: Dell gx260 --> 3com switch --> NW6 server
Again this happens only to the Dell 260's and 270's so far. The very first batch of 260's that we recieved seem to be working fine, the remainder have this problem. What is so different about these machines? A few Dell laptops that we have in use seem to work fine.
Steven: What NIC's do the GX110's have in them? Do the 240's and the 260's have similar specs?
This is where is get a little wierd (ok, it already is). The GX240 & GX260 are running two different nics.
GX240 is using a 3COM 3C920
GX260 is using a Intel 10/100/1000
It problem is really hit or miss. I am trying to launch an EXE from a NW6SP3 (with latest TCP/NSS patches, oh & OP LOC levels 1 & 2 have been turned off per Novell) box that is approx 2Mb in size. It takes around 60 seconds to come up. The box it's running from (the server) is a Compaq/HP DL380G3 with a Fiber NC6670 1000mbs NIC, 2Gb of Memory, and Dual 2.4Ghz processors. I move the dir that contained the EXE to a NW5.1SP5 server (which is an HP LP2000r) and the EXE launches in around 15 secs. Still slow, but better. The GX110 I'm testing on is also using the 3COM 3C920 NIC that the GX240 usings and it launches the EXE from the NW6.0 server in 7 Secs!!!
Tomorrow when I log in (on my GX240) the problem may or may not be there (most likey it will be there). The EXE may launch in 15 seconds or 65 seconds. This is not limited to this EXE I'm running. Anything that access' the NW6.0 server will see the delay. I know it have the problem, thus far, only on GX240's & GX260's. I can not get is to happen on a GX110.

The link lights remain on when the system freezes, it's as if the system is still working on the file, and it comes through after about 5 min.
The file on the server is not locked and usually the file has been saved correctly.
