Overriding Integrated Network Interface Card

Hello, I have a Dell Dimension B110 computer with Windows XP.  During a thunderstorm, my Internet connection was lost.  My computer now displays an icon telling me I have an unplugged cable.  The socket of the router which my cable was connected to is no longer working.  However, the other three sockets are working.  In additon, the cable that was connected to my computer is also ok.  When I checked on the status of my NIC card (a Intel PRO/100 VE) by using Device Manager, I was told that it was working properly.

I ordered a NIC card (D-Link's DFE-550TX) from Dell and installed it.  I installed the drivers for this card.  However, my computer does not recognize it - New Hardware Wizard never started.  When I checked the Network Adapters listed in Device Manager, it only list Inte PRO/ 100 VE Network Connection.  I have even tried to unistall the drivers for this card, but it keeps reinstalling itself.  I have even gone into the BIOS to turn off the dectection of the network card, and then, tried to install the D-Link with no luck - the computer does not recognize it.

Is there another way for me to override the integrated NIC card so that the computer will recognize the new one?

Any help would be appreciated.  I use the Internet a lot for the courses I teach.

Hi kevin,

First a computer can have more than one nic (network adapter card). It sounds like the computer is not recognizing the card or drivers you need updated drivers.

If you still want to not use the other nic just use device manager to disable the device. (right click device then properties and disable).

Hope this helps you.

P.s.
Installing device drivers sometimes is a bit tricky not always just plug & play, check device manager to see if there is an unknown or other devices with a conflict (will have a exclamation mark in a yellow triangle) if you see this then this is the new nic right click and install new drivers.

I have had trouble in the past installing D-link cards I try and avoid them.
