PC appears on Network map but.....

Question

Still trying to sort out networking, via wired routed, my new dimension 9200 running Vista Home Premium and an older Dimension 8300 running XP SP2. (XP machine successfully networked with an older, now discarde windows 98 machine quite happily for years....). Have installed the patch on the XP machine, as mentioned in other threads, set router addresses as trusted in mcafee on both pc's. Windows firewall disabled on both. On Vista machine network discovery and file sharing are on, with other sharing and discovery settings all off.   Current position is that in the vista control panel the xp machine and vista machines both show on full network map. In the network and sharing centre only the router and vista machine show up. Running diagnose and repair says windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automaticallly. Have followed links to try and resolve several times to no avail. Networking with vista seems to require endless patience!   On the XP machine when I ask it to search for network computers I get 'workgroup is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource......'   There was a brief moment yesterday when I managed to get the xp machine appearing in the network and sharing centre and successfully viewed photos on the xp....crashed when i tried to add printer and have not managed to achieve this state since.   What 'simple' trick have I overlooked.........   thanks   Haffy..

Back to square 1...Vista machine shows xp machine on full map with its new name...Still no show in network and sharing centre and apparently some form of network problem windows cannot diagnose.   seeting up windows 98 and xp was a breeze compared to this!!!!1

This is bizarre. Just used search for computers on xp machine and typed in name of vista pc. Vista pc duly appeared, I double clicked on it and managed to access file in shared folder i had set up on vista machine. Still could not see machine in network places on xp machine. vista machine still did not list the xp one in the network and sharing centre. What on earth is going on.... Have just re-named the xp machine to see if that may help! Lets see what happens on restart...

In Security Centre the user account control is turned on. Could this be causing my network problems with the xp machine?

Just managed to get it working on both machines. Hope its not a fluke. Went in to Mcafee internet and network map and then answered question do i trust computers on this network. Clicked yes and after a long 'scan' seeming to take place xp machine appeared on vista machine and i could open files and vice cerca on xp machine.   Presumably I will have to do this every time i want to use the network......   Far more hassle than the old xp/win 98 set up i had but at least i can get it to work....   many thanks to numerous replies to my various posts which have helped me to eventually crack my problem.
