PC to PC via USB ... ???

I have a Dimension XPS T500 (upgraded to 1.4 GHz Tualatin) and have just ordered an 8400 ... Will it be possible to just stick a USB 2.0 card from one to the other and have a network appear on both, or do I need a specific USB to USB networking cable (I've seen these on the net, but wondered if they are actually necessary).

One PC is Win 2000 Pro and other will be XP Home SP1 or else Win 2000 Pro.

What's the difference? As in will I have access to share resources (eg modem, printer) and files/disks?

Do you have the name of such a product and I could look that up to get an idea?

Thanks.

You can connect 2 computers together with a USB cable, but it has to be a special cable, it has to come with software that will enable the connection, and it will not be the same as a regular network connection between the two computers.

Yes, this should work just fine.

Colm,

Generally, the USB cable and software will allow you to transfer files, but it will not act like a network in the sense that you can run internet connection sharing or share a printer.  To do this you would have to install an ethernet card in each computer (about $10 each here in the U.S.) and connect them with a cross-over cable (about $8 here in the U.S.).

I have a DLink DWL-122 wireless adaptor in the XPS T, and I think you have just convinced me to get the same for the 8400. This allows for peer to peer ad-hoc wireless networking, which, although slow on this specific adaptor (11Mbps), will be fine for internet and printer sharing, along with the odd file transfer ... Am I right in thinking this will work ... It does to my iPaq!!!

I really appreciate the help ... I would have gone out and gotten USB without your info.
