It appears that you have a Dell Optiplex GX50 system. This system model employs an 3COM 3C905c integrated NIC. This integrated device is based on the 3C920 chip. The Windows 98 driver for this chipset can be found here.

Hmm, this seems to have not worked out well. my NIC card used to work when i had windows 2000 on here, but when i put 98 on, it no longer worked. The NIC card apparently is not recognized and is under "other devices" in the device manager. I went to the "add new hardware" program in the control panel, and it says the device is installed, but the drivers are not. I downloaded what you said to download, but i tried every driver just to be sure something wasnt mixed up somehow, and it didnt help.

thanks again,

Note that Dell Cody was making an educated guess at the model of your computer and the possible network card installed.  Until you can give us the model of your computer, we will continue to be only making guesses as to which drivers you need.  What does it say on the front of the computer?  If you find the service tag on a label on the back of the computer, you can use that to log in to the Dell Support web site and determine which model you have.

well, the service tag is "BFG9Q11", i went to the Dell website and entered it in. Dell Cody was in fact right with the model of my computer (Optiplex GX50). I downloaded the driver, and followed the instructions, BUT i saw no driver for the NIC card in the folder where all the drivers were extracted to. This means my NIC card is still not working. To this is say boo. Im thinking of obtaning a copy of Windows 2000 and re-installing it, maybe that will fix it. For the time being, USB connection is better then dial up but still very slow. Any help is greatly appreciated because this one is giving me a headache.

thanks,

Devon
