PCW300 in Thinkpad 380ED
I have a Uniden PCW300 in an old Thinkpad 380ED. It works very well with my D-Link 524 Wireless Router in both encrypted and unencrypted mode...... I took it down to my local coffee shop and found that while I could get a very strong signal, and it showed both upload and download activity, I could not actually connect with the internet. I got a "cannot connect with server" and "check WEP settings" messages. I checked the WEP settings, and tried every single one (including disable) and it made no difference. The coffee shop does not use an encrypted signal, and everyone in there but me was having no trouble accessing the signal. What could the problem be? I know the Uniden PCW300 is a 802.11b card, could the coffee shop be 802.11g only? Thanks in advance.........

Assuming you're using the "Uniden Wireless Configuration Utility", did you select the "Coffee Shop's" SSID from the "Site Survey" tab in Uniden's utility? Maybe it's still trying to connect to your D-Link DI-524 SSID's profile...
What OS are you using on the old Thinkpad 380ED... WinXP (SP1 or SP2)?
WinXP also has its’ own “Wireless configuration Utility” (built-in), that can also be used... alternatively.
I prefer to use the free "Boingo Wireless Configuration Utility" for WinXP/2000 ("click here"). I believe I still have their discontinued Win98SE/ME Wireless Configuration Utility, somewhere... (found a link - "click here").
Wireless "G" routers are usually backward compatible with the "B" protocol and usually have a "mixed B/G mode" default. While it's possible to be intentionally set to a "G- only mode", I don't see why a "Hotspot" would...
Aloha,
Rod
