PDA Emulation on Latitude D620 Notebook

I am currently investigating the above for the company I work.

I have found that the emulator I require is downloadable from Microsoft as part of Visual Studio (Windows Mobile v.6).

The Issue I am having is getting the Emulator to connect to our company network via the SIM Card.

In the company we have a number of mobile staff who were issued some time ago with PDA's with Windows Mobile 6 and some bespoke (and quite expensive) software installed. Recently the company has decided that they should have laptops instead and issued one of the above laptops to each of these employees. the issue is that the bespoke software is written to interface with the central system only via the PDA route (I believe there is some use of the messaging service)

Rather than (or perhaps until) having this software re-written specifically for the laptops we have decided to look into using the Laptop to emulate the PDA.

Hopefully all that makes sense, and now to the problem. I have read on various forums that a SIM can be used to allow these laptops to connect to a network but does anyone know if it would be possible to have the emulator use the SIM, not as a connection to mobile broadband but into the telephone system (SMS & MMS only not for voice)
