ping and net view...
Hi, I've just bought a dell Dimension 8400. Im having a network problem. After setting all the different numbers (IP address, netmask, gateway, DNS server) I was able to connect to internet ONCE, when I tried next time nothing happened! Im not so good with
computers, but I've managed to find a built-in troubleshooter, which told me to use the ping command to see what the problem might be. Now, when I use ping it works fine for everything except the IP address, then it shows timeout error. I've also used the net view command and it sends back the message "system error 53 has occurred" when I net view my IP address...what the heck is this and how do I fix it?
grrrrrr

Is it possible that the network uses MAC address filtering, where the MAC address of the network card has to be entered in the main server in order for the connection to work? You might want to consult your IT department for help in setting up networking on a new computer.

Hmm, i think its called a LAN ?? Its a separate network (about 400 members). No cable, dialup or so anyway. Theres a central server somewhere here. I think there is also a router, but those things have never been a problem. I just plug in the internet cable on my computer. Our IP addresses are set manually once and for all. On my old (this one) computer i set all the numbers and it worked right away, so i tried to compare the two computers to find out whats wrong but nooo....on my old computer the ping thing works fine. Theres a Norton firewall builtin in the new comp, i switched it off but nothing changed.

How are you connecting to the internet (cable, dsl, dialup)? Are you connecting through a router? Why do you have to manually assign IP addresses, DNS server addresses, gateways, etc? Perhaps with some more information, we could help you with your problem.

You reply really fast!
OK, Ill talk to the guys handling the network about this, maybe you are right.
But how could I get a connection the first time i wonder? Anyway, if i find the solution ill post it here. The reason i posted my question here is cause I read other messages here, they seem to indicate that there is a problem with the Dell network cards.
