Please help can't get online wired dsl

I’m in a condo right now that has high-speed DSL provided. All I was suppose to have to do is plug in my cable and I would be good to go. I have done this with a network cable I brought from home. I get the screen in my sys tray with a question mark. When I click on this I hit repair and it comes back and tells me something like can’t get an ip address assigned. The data jack or what ever it’s called is suppose to be turned on and I’m 99% sure my network cable is good.
Any ideas on trouble shooting this problem to see if the jack does have a signal or what I can do next?
I’m lucky that I’m getting a wireless signal from someone. Yes I know that’s bad that I’m using it.
Maybe the wrong cable? I’m using the one from home that I had run from my router to a different computer. This is the right one isn’t it?
Inspiron 6000 Windows XP
Thanks

you need a patch cat5 cable.
it's possible that you may have a crossover cat5 cable which works with some routers.

Have you talked with the Internet Service Provider that provides the DSL service?  I'd be surprised if they had an open enabled port unless you signed up to pay for their service.

The ISP service tech should be able to walk you through the process of linking up.

Thanks will try a diff cable tomorrow.
Yes I'm sure the dsl is turned on, or so says the office. It's turned on all the time by the person that rents this unit. It's part of the deal
Thanks

Because you are not receiving the IP address and as an attempt to find the easy answer, this might work.

In Control Panel, expand your network connection and right-click on the Local Network Connection listing and open the properties to make certain that the "Obtain an IP address automatically." selection is enabled.

Then try to re-establish your modem connection.

I hope it helps.

Doubt if anyone is following this thread but thought I would close it.

After three days on the phone with the provider trying to get online, and kind of telling me how dumb I was for not being able to get online they sent a tech out to help me.

The wall jack thing was bad, he changed it, plugged the cable in and I came right up.

Thanks again
