PLEASE HELP - Setting Up Netgear Wireless Router with Inspiron E1705

I have an Inspiron 1705 notebook and recentless purchased a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I am connected through DSL (Verizon). My internet connection is fine, but when i go to install the router it will not detect a connection.
Specifically, I get to the point where it is resetting the network and it fails. This despite the fact that the modem is connected, and the wireless router is lit as well (power, internet, and the correct port where the computer is connected).
I have tried to redo it several times and have spent time on the phone with Netgear (which is no help)
Anyone else have a similar problem/advice? I haven't even been able to attempt to set up the wireless yet because i cannot get past this initial stage of installing the router. I really cannot figure out what is going wrong.

Thanks!

Is this Pre-N?
When I set up a router, it held my hand and told me exactly what and when to connect, disconnect, reconnect and such and when to reset.
There are many postings about troubles with a certain modem which I believe is from Verizon. What is the name and model of your modem?

Thanks! Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. Hopefully, their solutions work. Thanks again for your advice.

It's a Westell -- and yes, it came from Verizon. I haven't had problems with the modem prior to this though. I contacted Verizon and they were no help. And the Netgear does take through step by step and i have gone through it several times -- It gets to the point where it is restarting the network and thats where it hits a problem

Just below the "jump to page" on this screen there is a search box. Type "Westell" and it will bring up many postings about the problems with this modem and Dell.
I think the problem(s) can be fixed. Read and see.
